Scale-dependent determinants of plant species richness in a semi-arid fragmented agro-ecosystem

איתמר גלעדי, פליקס מאי, מיכאל רוסטוב, ירון זיו, Florian Jeltsch

The aims were: Understanding how the relationship between species richness and its determinants depends on the interaction between scales at which the response and explanatory variables are measured; Quantifying the relative contributions of local, intermediate and large-scale determinants of species richness in a fragmented agro-ecosystem; Testing the hypothesis that the relative contribution of these determinants varies with the grain size at which species richness is measured.

Use of alternative habitats by spiders in a desert agroecosystem

יעל לובין, איריס מוסלי, פיליס ויינטראוב, איתי אופטובסקי

It was asked- to what extent do predators use non-crop habitats as refuges or breeding sites in the desert agroecosystem of the northern Negev, Israel? thet investigated the use of natural desert habitat, planted trees (Eucalyptus), and a summer crop (sunflowers) by winter-wheat inhabiting spiders.

Seeking Sustainability: Israel’s Evolving Water Management Strategy

אלון טל

The water management policies adopted to address Israel’s chronic scarcity have not been without environmental consequences. Yet, through a trial-and-error process, a combined strategy of water transport, rainwater harvesting, and wastewater reuse and desalination, along with a variety of water conservation measures, have put the country on a more sustainable path for the future.

Spatial and temporal variation in sugar availability for insect parasitoids in agricultural fields and consequences for reproductive success

מיכל סגולי, Jay A. Rosenheim

Our ability to improve biological control of insect pests depends on our understanding of factors that limit the reproductive success of their natural enemies in the field. Pest control by parasitoids in agricultural fields can be compromised by the availability of sugar resources. We studied sugar availability for Anagrus parasitoids that parasitize the eggs of leafhopper pests (genus Erythroneura) in vineyards in northern California.

Spiders in wheat fields and semi-desert in the Negev (Israel)

איתי אופטובסקי, אפרת גביש-רגב, יעל לובין, Therese Pluess, Martin Schmidt-Entling

The present study compares activity-densities and species richness of spiders in two dominant habitat types in the arid agroecosystem in the northwest Negev Desert- Intensively cultivated arable land and semi-desert.
