The potential conflict between traditional perceptions and environmental behavior: compost use by Muslim farmers

Areej Haj

This study examined how Muslim farmers perceive the issue of impurity of compost sources and the extent to which the conflict between traditional and modern values affects compost use.

Repeated probing of hosts: an important component of superparasitism

Parasitoids that encounter a previously parasitized host inspect it externally and internally, sometimes eventually laying additional eggs (superparasitism). The fitness effects of increased clutch sizes generated through superparasitism are widely studied, whereas the consequences of multiple host probings during the inspection received less attention.

Scale-dependent determinants of plant species richness in a semi-arid fragmented agro-ecosystem

The aims were: Understanding how the relationship between species richness and its determinants depends on the interaction between scales at which the response and explanatory variables are measured; Quantifying the relative contributions of local, intermediate and large-scale determinants of species richness in a fragmented agro-ecosystem; Testing the hypothesis that the relative contribution of these determinants varies with the grain size at which species richness is measured.

Use of alternative habitats by spiders in a desert agroecosystem

It was asked- to what extent do predators use non-crop habitats as refuges or breeding sites in the desert agroecosystem of the northern Negev, Israel? thet investigated the use of natural desert habitat, planted trees (Eucalyptus), and a summer crop (sunflowers) by winter-wheat inhabiting spiders.

Limited kin discrimination abilities mediate tolerance toward relatives in polyembryonic parasitoid wasps

We modeled the possible effect of limited kin discrimination on larval aggression in polyembryonic wasps. In these organisms, each egg divides clonally to produce several genetically identical embryos inside an arthropod host. If more than one egg is laid inside a host (superparasitism), several clones compete for the host resources. In some species, a proportion of embryos develop into sterile soldier larvae that attack competitors inside the host.

Limits to the reproductive success of two insect parasitoid species in the field

Jay A. Rosenheim

Debates on the relative importance of different factors in limiting the realized fitness of insect parasitoids and herbivores have continued for decades. We used a novel technique to estimate lifetime reproductive success in two Anagrus spp. parasitoids, whose hosts are eggs of leafhoppers that feed on grape leaves.

Natural enemies of the South American moth, Tuta absoluta, in Europe, North Africa and Middle East, and their potential use in pest control strategies

The South American tomato leafminer, Tuta absoluta Meyrick (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae), is an invasive Neotropical pest. After its first detection in Europe, it rapidly invaded more than 30 Western Palaearctic countries becoming a serious agricultural threat to tomato production in both protected and open-field crops. Among the pest control tactics against exotic pests, biological control using indigenous natural enemies is one of the most promising

Natural habitat does not mediate vertebrate seed predation as an ecosystem dis-service to agriculture

Henrik von Wehrden

It was studied whether vertebrates and their impact in crop seed predation are related to the percentage of natural (chaparral) and semi-natural habitat (planted forest with native and exotic trees) in an agricultural landscape of Israel.
