THE BARN OWL – A SELECTIVE OPPORTUNIST PREDATOR

There are differing views in the literature regarding the feeding strategy of the barn owl (Tyto alba, Strigiformes). Whereas some authors conclude that the barn owl is a selective predator, selecting to prey on certain species, oth- ers maintain that it is an opportunist. We studied the diet composition of barn owls from agricultural fields in northern Israel, using pellet analysis.

The Carpenter Bee Xylocopa pubescens as an Agricultural Pollinator in Greenhouses

They evaluated the carpenter bee X. pubescens, a local species to Israel, as a pollinator of greenhouse-grown honeydew melons, in comparison to honeybees.

The effect of host starvation on parasitoid brood size in a polyembryonic wasp

Wasp offspring do seem to adjust their numbers in response to host starvation, but not strongly

The parasitoid Copidosoma koehleri provides limited control of the potato tuber moth, Phthorimaea operculella, in stored potatoes

The potato tuber moth Phthorimaea operculella (Zeller) is a major pest of potatoes in the field, and of tubers stored under ambient temperatures post-harvest. The encyrtid parasitoid Copidosoma koehleri (Blanchard) effectively controls the pest in the field in some countries. We tested whether C. koehleri can also reduce tuber moth populations in storage.

Profiling crop pollinators: life history traits predict habitat use and crop visitation by Mediterranean wild bees

Wild pollinators, bees in particular, may greatly contribute to crop pollination and provide a safety net against declines in commercial pollinators. However, the identity, life history traits, and environmental sensitivities of main crop pollinator species have received limited attention. They sampled wild bees in three crop systems in a mosaic Israeli Mediterranean landscape.

The potential conflict between traditional perceptions and environmental behavior: compost use by Muslim farmers

Areej Haj

This study examined how Muslim farmers perceive the issue of impurity of compost sources and the extent to which the conflict between traditional and modern values affects compost use.

Repeated probing of hosts: an important component of superparasitism

Parasitoids that encounter a previously parasitized host inspect it externally and internally, sometimes eventually laying additional eggs (superparasitism). The fitness effects of increased clutch sizes generated through superparasitism are widely studied, whereas the consequences of multiple host probings during the inspection received less attention.

Scale-dependent determinants of plant species richness in a semi-arid fragmented agro-ecosystem

The aims were: Understanding how the relationship between species richness and its determinants depends on the interaction between scales at which the response and explanatory variables are measured; Quantifying the relative contributions of local, intermediate and large-scale determinants of species richness in a fragmented agro-ecosystem; Testing the hypothesis that the relative contribution of these determinants varies with the grain size at which species richness is measured.
